Guide

MAT is a 150-question, 120-minute paper with −0.25 for an incorrect answer, so speed matters—but blind speed leaks marks. The objective is to see enough of the paper while keeping low-confidence guesses under control.

Work with a two-pass system

On the first pass, collect direct questions: vocabulary/grammar items you know, familiar reasoning, standard arithmetic and DI questions whose setup is immediately visible. Mark medium questions for return instead of turning one question into a four-minute project.

On the second pass, choose medium questions where elimination or calculation has a clear route. Leave questions that still look ambiguous after a short re-read. Because wrong answers cost 0.25, random guessing across many blanks can undo part of the score you built cleanly.

Protect the five-section breadth

MAT has 30 questions each in Language, Intelligence & Critical Reasoning, Mathematical Skills, Data Analysis & Sufficiency, and Economic & Business Environment. A CAT student can easily over-invest in Quant/Reasoning and discover that direct business-environment or language questions were underprepared. Give every section a minimum coverage target.

Measure the right things

In mocks track `questions seen`, `attempts`, `wrong`, `time on abandoned questions`, and `score by section`. If accuracy is high but you leave 25–30 straightforward questions unseen, improve pace. If attempts are high but negatives rise sharply, tighten selection.

A good MAT strategy is not ‘one minute per question’. Some questions take 20 seconds and some take 90. Use the time saved on direct questions to fund the medium ones that are actually worth solving.

Put this rule into one measurable experiment

In your next MAT mock, change only one behaviour connected to mat speed & accuracy strategy. Decide the rule before the timer starts, then record its effect on attempts, accuracy, questions unseen and time lost. Multiple annual administrations and modes; score valid one year; broad B-school acceptance. Economic & Business Environment is distinct from CAT.

If the experiment improves score but creates a new section collapse, it is not yet a usable strategy. Repeat it once on a different paper before locking it. Exam strategy should survive a harder set or unfamiliar question mix; otherwise it is only a lucky mock pattern.
