IBSAT vs CAT/XAT/NMAT Score Route: Which Should You Use?

If you have already prepared for CAT, you do not need to start IBSAT from zero. The efficient transition is to preserve transferable skill and concentrate almost all new effort on what the second exam changes.

CAT → IBSAT transition map

ActionWhat changes
KeepKeep quant/RC basics
AddAdd much heavier direct Verbal
ModifyPractise Data Adequacy separately
Exam-specificUse no-negative coverage across 140 questions

First 3 days: diagnose the gap

Take one IBSAT-specific diagnostic without trying to force your CAT attempt pattern onto it. Compare section mix, time per question, negative/no-negative rules and direct-knowledge sections. Write down only the gaps CAT never trained and the CAT habits that are now too slow or too cautious.

Next 7–10 days: practise the delta

Spend roughly half your new practice on the exam-specific additions and half on timed mixed work. Do not spend the week re-learning arithmetic or RC you already know unless the diagnostic proves those skills are weak. For knowledge sections, use short daily recall; for new reasoning/judgement sections, use question-by-question review.

Then move to full mocks

Your first full mock establishes an exam-specific baseline. Review the unique metric: Single application covers 9 IBS campuses; other national test scores can replace IBSAT; no negative marking; unusually large Verbal+RC share.. The objective is to develop a new execution plan, not to prove CAT preparation was enough.

What CAT students most often get wrong

They either underestimate the OMET and do no dedicated practice, or overreact and start a completely new syllabus. Both waste the transfer value of months of CAT work. Keep the base, learn the differences, and test them under the actual paper clock. That is usually the shortest route from CAT readiness to a competitive IBSAT performance.

A seven-day implementation test

Day 1: take a short diagnostic in the exact IBSAT format. Days 2–4: work only on the two gaps that are genuinely different from your current preparation. Day 5: timed mixed practice. Day 6: full or half mock. Day 7: review attempts, accuracy, time loss and the exam-specific section/rule highlighted on this page.

Keep the parts of CAT/other-exam preparation that transfer; add only what IBSAT demands. The test after seven days is simple: can you name the exact behaviour that improved, and did the timed score/coverage confirm it?

Why On Your Mocks?

A mock score tells you what happened. OYM helps you understand what went wrong and what to work on next.
