What If CAT 2026 Feels Easier Than Your Mocks? Avoid the Easy-Paper Trap
A difficult CAT scares students.
An easier CAT can quietly damage them.
Why?
Because the moment the paper feels comfortable, the internal rule changes:
> “I should attempt everything.”
That is where strong candidates begin donating negatives.
Easier paper ≠ easier percentile
CAT 2024 was broadly assessed by major coaching institutes as easier than CAT 2023.
That does not mean competition disappeared.
When more candidates can score well, your accuracy becomes even more valuable.
If you are solving faster, widen opportunity—not risk
The correct response is:
More high-confidence attempts.
Not:
Lower standards for what deserves an attempt.
Use extra time to scan wider and pick more solvable questions.
Readable passages can create false confidence.
Do not stop eliminating options just because comprehension felt smooth.
Easy passage, difficult question is completely possible.
Increase attempts only when the additional choices are defensible.
If two sets open quickly, solve them cleanly.
Do not rush Set 1 because you are already thinking about Set 3.
The easy-paper trap is sacrificing confirmed marks for imagined future marks.
Familiar-looking questions are dangerous.
“Doable” in five minutes is not necessarily a good CAT attempt.
Keep your first-pass rule.
Collect clean marks first, then expand.
In mocks, notice whether confidence makes you:
These are not knowledge errors.
They are attention errors.
During CAT, forget statements such as:
> “If the paper is easy, I need 100+.”
You do not know scaling, slot behaviour or the final percentile curve.
Maximise the score available from your paper.
When the paper feels easier:
Raise attempts slowly. Keep selection standards high.
Not every mock should be easy.
But an occasional easier mock is useful because it tests whether you can recognise opportunity without becoming careless.
Afterwards, compare:
extra attempts vs extra net marks
If six extra attempts produced only three extra marks, your adaptation was poor.
If they produced 14–16 additional net marks, you probably expanded well.
